Nicki Minaj, Trey Songz, More Share Their New Year's Resolutions
Avril Lavigne wants to 'be healthy' and 'focus hard.'
By Kara Warner
With all the 2010 wrap-up stories and year-end lists dominating these last few days, it's time to start thinking beyond New Year's Eve and into the new year. And you know what that means: New Year's resolutions. The most popular vows generally revolve around health (weight loss, exercise, quitting smoking) and finance (spend less).
However when MTV News caught up with a few of our favorite stars recently to find out what they resolve to do in 2011, their commitments were a bit more unique.
"My New Year's resolution is to stay true to myself," "Bottoms Up" singer Trey Songz revealed. "Regardless of what anybody says, I'll never let anybody else's thoughts dictate that of my own."
"Probably just progress more as an actor," said 12-year-old "Modern Family" scene-stealer Rico Rodriguez.
Avril Lavigne had three broad goals in mind: "Be healthy, focus hard, make sure to see [my] family."
MTV's own "Jersey Shore" standout Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino said his plans involve moving from the small screen to the big one. "[I might be] doing maybe a movie or something," he teased.
Chart-topping pink princess Nicki Minaj offered the most colorful response: "[I'll be] touring around the world. It's looking like the biggest, baddest, I don't know ... I should've had something better to say," she began, and then invented a few words on the spot, for emphasis on just how big 2011 will be for the "Your Love" singer. "[I'm going to be the] biggest, baddest, boldest, booming-est, fearless-ocity-est, Pink Friday-est, girl," she promised.
Which celeb will fulfill their New Year's resolution? Tell us in the comments!
Don't miss "MTV New Year's Bash," starting at 10:30 p.m. ET on New Year's Eve!

Stephen Dorff Talks 'Somewhere,' Career Ups And Downs
'I thought I was a sell-out, playing a vampire,' the actor says about his memorable role in 'Blade.'
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Although his role in "Somewhere" was one of the most challenging of his career, Stephen Dorff is grateful to writer/director Sofia Coppola for giving him the opportunity to play a character who is a complete departure from the menacing, murderous types audiences are used to seeing him portray.
When MTV News caught up with the actor, he explained that "Somewhere" is the kind of independent art film he was most interested in at the start of his career — which has spanned more than two decades — but when Hollywood started calling, he reluctantly veered into bigger films playing bad boys and villains.
"[After the 1992 coming-of-age drama 'Power of One,'] Hollywood was coming to me, but I was kind of resisting," Dorff said of his early years in the business. "I really wanted to make art films. I loved working on movies like 'I Shot Andy Warhol' [and] 'S.F.W.' I liked doing edgier things. I was kind of into Nirvana, I was into rebelling against my childhood."
He added, "I wasn't really interested in playing vulnerable, sweet parts, like I played in 'Power of One' and 'Backbeat,' so in a way I think I did that to my own image. I kind of fought it. Then, when it came time to wanting to do [a sensitive role again], it wasn't necessarily there for me.
"Then 'Blade' came around and I thought that was the end of my career," Dorff admitted. "Because I thought I was a sell-out, playing a vampire."
Dorff said that those reservations eventually subsided and that he enjoyed making the action-horror flick.
"I had a good time with [director] Steve Norrington," Dorff said. "I knew he was talented. I had seen this little teeny movie he did and I knew this guy was going to make a good movie."
Dorff went on to say that now he feels that "Blade," as well as the first "Matrix" movie, were well ahead of their time with regard to what they opened up for filmmaking.
"Now we have so many comic-book movies and they're kind of regenerating the same movie," he explained. "In a way, there's not much originality to them. I like that we did ours earlier."
Dorff said that leading up to and after "Blade," he tried going for less dark roles, but that he couldn't resist opportunities to work with the likes of Jack Nicholson (1997's "Blood and Wine") and other great actors, so he became typecast.
"Up until now, really, this movie is the first time somebody like Sofia [Coppola] said, 'Well there's another side to Stephen, maybe he can play the leading man, maybe he can be a little sweeter and not have to kill everybody," Dorff suggested.
"It's nice that now I get texts after 'Somewhere' [that say,] 'You make such a good dad!' " he reveals about his family members' reactions to his performance in the film. "It's so different than 'Why were you so scary and mean?' "

'Teen Mom' Amber Banned from Seeing Ex & Baby

Teen Mom's Amber Portwood is breathing a sigh of relief since getting released from jail Tuesday, but she's still got a rough road ahead of her. The reality star spent 24 hours behind bars after being taking into custody on charges of felony domestic battery and neglect. She plead not guilty to both charges and was released on $5000 bail.
Portwood's violent outbursts against ex-fiance Gary Shirley were well documented on the MTV series and, according to a sheriff's department spokesman, the 20-year-old has now been ordered to stay away from Shirley.
But what about their 2-year-old daughter, Leah? Well, the protective order also barred Portwood from contact with her little girl, but Portwood's lawyer is optimistic that mother and daughter will be reunited.
"It's my understanding that Leah will be placed back with her," attorney Robert Schembs told People.com.
Even Shirley wants Leah back with his ex.
"The lady from (Child Protective Services) is going to go there and testify on Amber's behalf," Portwood's brother told E! News. "Gary is really upset. He wants to testify on Amber's behalf, too. He doesn't want the no contact rule at all. He wants Leah to see Amber."
It seems that, despite their violent history, Shirley is still in his ex's corner. "Oddly enough, Amber and Gary want to work things out in some capacity," the brother said. "They've been getting along great, and now this happens."
Should Amber Portwood be banned from seeing her daughter? Chime in below!

Kelly Osbourne Isn't First Celeb To Publicly Lash Out At An Ex
Our relationship expert offers advice after reality star's Twitter tirade against Luke Worrall and David Arquette's candid sex talk about Courteney Cox.
By Kara Warner

After Kelly Osbourne's recent Twitter tirade against ex-fiancé Luke Worrall, which included several potentially slanderous and profanity-laced statements, it seemed wise that the reality star said she'd be signing off Twitter for a while, hopefully in order to recover from her heartbreak and stop airing any more dirty laundry in such a public setting.
Osbourne's incident reminded us of David Arquette calling into Howard Stern and discussing his and ex Courteney Cox's sex life on the radio.
This got us to thinking: How do you bounce back from such emotional, and often regrettable, actions? According to relationship expert Amy Laurent, the first thing to do: Stop talking.
"The worst thing you can do is lash out in public," Laurent told MTV News. "The way [Osbourne] comes off is not good. I don't know the ins and outs of their relationship, but the best thing she can do is to stop talking. Don't say a word more."
Laurent added that Osbourne's reactions were a natural part of the grieving process, but that she should make some kind of comment or apology, acknowledging the fact that she was hurt, upset and just plain heartbroken.
"When you get your heart broken, [the first cycle of grief] is the sadness, the depression, crying, and then the next cycle is to get angry," Laurent explained. "That's the natural progression."
Laurent added, with regard to Arquette's situation, he should have gone straight to Cox to apologize. "If you're still talking to them, go to that person you broke up with and apologize and see if you can join forces," she said. " 'I'm sorry I was stupid.' Try and have that other person support you to clean it up."
For anyone suffering from a recent breakup, not just celebrities, Laurent recommended staying away from sites like Facebook and Twitter.
"Don't Facebook stalk," she said. "I would recommend to totally refrain from any of that stuff, even making little comments in reference. ... And don't do anything impulsively, she added. It's hard to do when you're emotional, when you have a broken heart, but you have to slow down and not do anything impulsive."
For celebs, however, the bar for expected good behavior after breaking up with another famous face is much higher. Laurent said there's an aspect of censorship to which celebs unfortunately have to adhere.
"Nobody ever wants to think that they have to censor themselves, but to a certain extent, [celebrities] can't 100 percent be themselves," she said. "Someone like David Arquette, he is more easily forgivable, people want to like him. He's a perfect example of how people make mistakes and you can kind of fix those mistakes if you're willing to admit it."
Laurent said Osbourne's rant, unfortunately, went way too far.
"You have to show a level of restraint, even if that person cheated on you, treated you like absolute dirt. You still can't lash out, because you're not going to get that sympathy from the public if you do that," she said. "But I think she's sensitive and young. I feel bad for her. I hope people keep that in mind when they judge her, but I hope she really learns from this."
Was Osbourne's rant justified? How can she recover? Tell us in the comments!

Beyonce's Mom Says Daughter's Style Has Always Been 'Edgy'
'It's just a result of her constantly evolving,' Tina Knowles says of the fashion in Beyonce's "I Am ... World Tour" DVD concert special.

Beyoncé has never been shy about hitting the stage in stunning costumes. Her appearance has always been a mixture of showgirl sparkle and pop star razzle-dazzle. And her style is on full display in her new DVD concert special, "I Am ... World Tour."
Her mom and stylist, Tina Knowles, said that while the looks may seem a bit edgier than what fans have seen from the singer in the past, she thinks that her superstar daughter has always been ahead of the style curve.
"Well, the wonderful Thierry Mugler designed the costumes, and I actually worked on some of the dancers and the band, and it was just amazing to work with him because he is so creative," Knowles told MTV News at a New York screening of the special. "So it's just a result of her constantly evolving, but she's been edgy. It's funny for people to say she went more edgy, but she's been wearing body suits and that type of thing."
And while Knowles may act as her daughter's stylist and costume designer, she says that Bey's style decisions are all her own. "Well, we discussed her working with Thierry Mugler, and I'm the biggest fan. And so she had seen some of the fashions and she loved it," she said. "So we always discuss things, but it's her decision, it's her career."
Beyoncé, who also directed the concert special , said it gave her a better understanding of the filmmaking process. "It was hard work," she said. "I learned so much. I have a new respect for directors and I think I would like to do more of it. ... Well, I've done some co-directing for music videos [but] this was definitely a big step for me, and I'm so thrilled."

Justin Bieber Causes Mall Frenzy On Boxing Day

If Justin Bieber thought he could hit up his local mall on Boxing Day without stirring up a frenzy, he was wrong. When Bieber decided to partake in the post-Christmas holiday on Sunday, hoardes of teenage girls took notice ... and freaked out.
According to Canada's Record, when Bieber arrived at the Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener, Ontario, the day after Christmas, he couldn't fly under the radar while trying to shop. "There were vases being broken and people climbing over other people and a lot of screaming," Bieber fan Taylor Inder told the newspaper. The fan added that there was lots of "chaos" and "screaming, screaming and more screaming."
Bieber first made a stop at a jeans store in the mall and then went to check out sunglasses, when he was followed by hundreds of female fans. Police officers also followed Bieber and his entourage. Bieber hails from Stratford, Canada, near the mall.
"I thought, 'My God it's a 16-year-old boy who's shopping; what's the big deal here?" Sunglass Hut manager Sarah Pelletier recalled about being asked to shut down for the pop star's arrival. "I was concerned because there were hundreds of girls out there and three police officers at my glass doors, and I'm like, 'I don't think this is a good mix.' "
She explained that she wanted to get Bieber in and out as quickly as possible. "I'm glad he supports his local economy, and he said he keeps some of his money in Canada," she added.
While many Bieber fans delighted at the chance to catch a glimpse of the star, Bieber himself tweeted: "Of course i had to join in on Boxing Day....Im Canadian."

'Little Fockers' Celebrates At The Holiday Box Office
'Fockers' won a meager first-place prize, while 'True Grit' blasted its way to second place.

'Tis the season to be jolly, but while the holiday spirit was present in millions of households this past weekend, it wasn't felt with nearly as much fanfare at the movies.
It was a fairly quiet weekend at the box office this holiday season, with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro's "Little Fockers" leading the pack with an estimated $34 million from Friday through Sunday and a five-day total of $48.3 million. But while Jack still has his eye on Greg, few people entered the circle of trust this go-around, as "Fockers," the second sequel to the critically acclaimed "Meet the Parents," failed to match the success of its predecessor "Meet the Fockers," which earned $70.5 million in its first five days in 2004.
Indeed, the second-place showing for "True Grit" was more impressive than the first-place "Fockers" in many respects. For one, the Jeff Bridges-starring Western drew $36.8 million since opening on Wednesday of last week, nearly crushing its entire $38 million production budget in a single session. "True Grit" also marked the single-best opening for any Coen brothers movie to date, easily surpassing the $19.1 million "Burn After Reading" earned in 2008.
"Tron Legacy" remained on the gaming grid this weekend with a third-place finish worth $25.6 million. The movie suffered a steep 54 percent drop from its opening performance last weekend, leaving some to wonder whether Disney's decision to revitalize the science-fiction franchise was a sound one.
The weekend's biggest disappointment was Jack Black's "Gulliver's Travels," which debuted Saturday and ended the weekend in seventh place with $7.2 million. Releasing the film on Christmas Day was a risky gamble on Fox's part, and despite the message that "Gulliver" has to offer, size really does matter when it comes to business, and unfortunately for the studio, the opening numbers on "Gulliver" are simply too small to consider the film anything but a flop.
The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Little Fockers" ($34 million)
#2 "True Grit" ($25.6 million)
#3 "Tron Legacy" ($20.1 million)
#4 "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" ($10.8 million)
#5 "Yogi Bear" ($8.8 million)
Upcoming Releases
It's going to be another quiet weekend at the box office next week, with smaller-budget dramas "Another Year" and "Blue Valentine" sneaking in as the weekend's only new releases with a combined total of 10 theaters between the two of them.

Stephen Dorff Says Filming 'Somewhere' Was 'Pretty Extreme'
'It's the most naked part you could ever play,' Dorff says of his role in the Sofia Coppola-directed film.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
For many moviegoers familiar with his work, Stephen Dorff is most recognized for playing dark, destructive and evil characters à la Deacon Frost in "Blade" — the role for which he took home an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain. His new movie "Somewhere," written and directed by Sofia Coppola, is a complete departure from much of his previous work, a role that required Dorff to step into new territories of both filmmaking and acting.
"This one was pretty extreme because [Coppola] wanted to experience some real-time acting on film," Dorff told MTV News of Coppola, whose unique directorial style involved getting lingering shots of his character just staring off in the distance or literally doing nothing. "So if I smoke a cigarette, that might be one line in the script but in the movie it might be five minutes, so it's very authentic," he added.
Dorff said the role of Johnny Marco, a disenchanted movie star and absent father to 11-year-old Cleo (played by Elle Fanning), was the most challenging of his career thus far.
"It's the most naked part you could ever play, really, because there's no plot driving the emotion," he said. "There's no explosions, nobody dying to trigger an emotional breakdown, there's no bank robbery. This is a film that's based on almost a portrait of a guy we open with, and we find the monotony in his life. Then when Elle comes into play, Cleo, it becomes really this movie about an adolescent father who needs a change in his life or he's headed for disaster."
Dorff described Marco as broken, lost, confused and bored with his life, until his daughter comes along and he starts to realize how spending time with her, actually being a father, makes him happy.
"While he's been going through that, he's missed probably three years of crucial time with his daughter and the fog starts to lift throughout the film," he explained. "He starts to see this beautiful girl and starts to get his act together."
"Somewhere" began a limited run in theaters on Wednesday.
Check out everything we've got on "Somewhere."

Jay-Z is letting fans into his world with two major releases this month. He just published his book, "Decoded," in which he takes a closer look at his career, and on Monday (November 22), Hova is releasing a greatest-hits album, The Hits Collection, Volume 1.
The album features Jay's most memorable tunes, including "Big Pimpin'," "Hard Knock Life," "99 Problems" and his collabo with his superstar wife, Beyoncé, "03' Bonnie & Clyde."
But when MTV News caught up with Bey Sunday at a New York screening for her DVD concert special, "I Am ... World Tour," she admitted that "Bonnie & Clyde" isn't her favorite Jay-Z track.
"God, that's not my favorite, even though I like it," she laughed. "I can't tell you which one is my favorite. It's just too many. You're putting me on the spot!"
While the pair may be releasing fresh products at the same time, the singer insists there is no competition in the Carter-Knowles household.
"No absolutely not, [there is no competition]," she told reporters at the DVD event, going on to praise "Decoded." "That book is unbelievable, and I think we're all really proud of it. And this DVD [out this] Thanksgiving — it's the holiday season of everyone's [material] coming out."
The DVD shows a new, more intimate side of the usually private Beyoncé, and Jay-Z admits that his book also sheds new light on his persona and career. "A lot of people listen to music, but they don't really listen to it," he explained. "You may know the words and you may bop your head to it, but you don't really understand what you're singing."
Open the floodgates! It's Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

Michael Jackson Fans Celebrate Michael's Release With DJ Cassidy
'It was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson,' Cassidy says at album-release party Monday night.

NEW YORK — Many a Michael Jackson fan lined up outside of the Roseland Ballroom on Monday night to celebrate the release of the King of Pop's posthumous Michael album. Dozens of dancers and fans filled the ballroom's floor, decked out in costumes inspired by MJ's iconic looks from throughout his esteem career. One of those fans also happened to be the evening's master of ceremonies, DJ Cassidy.
"I'm here to make the fans dance," he told MTV News. "I think that's why Michael essentially made the music. He wanted to make people dance. He wanted to make people feel the emotion he felt, and I'm here to do just that. I'm here to help the fans in the celebration of the king."
Dressed in a leather suit with a pink shirt and socks, a red bowtie and shell-top Adidas, Cassidy said that he's been a fan of Jackson for as long as he can remember. The late singer has been his inspiration in anything artistic in his life, from music to fashion.
"So much of my fashion comes from Michael," Cassidy explained. "So much of how I play music comes from how he formed his songs, how he created his sound that really inspired the way that I DJ. And really, it inspired me to want to be a DJ, to want to make people dance.
"So, when I became a DJ at the age of 10, it was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson," he added. "Tonight's just a small way for me to really celebrate his music."
The party's guests also included producers Teddy Riley, Eddie Cascio and Neff U, who each had a hand in producing Michael's tracks. But before he began to spin for the night, Cassidy was thinking back to the classics, particularly his favorite party song, 1979's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."
"You can be anywhere in the world, any city, any small town, any type of crowd, black, white, old, young, poor, rich, at any type of venue," he said. "They could be wanting to hear house music, hip-hop music, anything in between, but 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' will turn that party out."

On Wednesday, the Recording Industry Association of America handed out their latest round of gold and platinum certifications ... and if your name was Ke$ha or Justin Bieber, well, then it was a very good day for you.
Ke$ha's Animal was certified gold (meaning it passed the 500,000-sales mark) and a spate of her digital singles went multiplatinum, with "Tik Tok" being downloaded more than 5 million times and "Your Love Is My Drug" racking up another 2 million. "Blah Blah Blah" and "Take It Off" both were certified gold, meaning that, all told, she's sold more than 8.5 million downloads to date.
Bieber earned his first-ever multiplatinum award, as the RIAA certified sales of his My World 2.0 album at more than 2 million copies. "Baby," his team-up with Ludacris, also was certified as double platinum.
Wednesday also was a great day to be the Black Eyed Peas, as their massive tune "I Gotta Feeling" was certified 6-times platinum (that's more than 6 million downloads) — making it the RIAA's highest-ever digital-song certification.
Following (somewhat) close behind the Peas were the likes of Katy Perry, B.o.B, Taio Cruz and Rihanna, who had their respective mega singles "California Gurls," "Airplanes," "Break Your Heart" and "Don't Stop the Music" certified as triple platinum. Perry and Rihanna also each picked up a double-platinum certification — for "Teenage Dream" and "Rude Boy," respectively — bringing their total hauls to more than 5 million units sold.
The Bruno Mars track "Just the Way You Are" was certified platinum, giving the crooner his very first solo plaque. B.o.B's "Magic" and former "American Idol" champ Kris Allen's "Live Like We're Dying" also picked up platinum certifications.

If Nicki Minaj is looking for someone to be the Ken to her Barbie, then the Lil Wayne protégé couldn't have done a better job than provocatively posing for the cover of King magazine.
The Young Money MC sports nothing but black lingerie and a silk dress shirt on the cover of the upcoming March/April issue, which will arrive on newsstands next month.
"I look for someone who is calm, someone who is strong enough to not have to win every argument, someone who allows a woman to be her crazy self and someone with a conscience not to feel less of a man," the radiant rap star told the magazine about her Mr. Right. "You know, someone who is able to honor his woman but also bring out the freak in his woman.
"Just being super aggressive when the time is right," she added.
The graduate of New York's LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts also talked about her goal of tackling acting in addition to rapping.
The Queens beauty said she admired Angelina Jolie for her fearless roles, but said she herself would be willing to take on more relatable characters and gave a nod to Will Smith's wife for her acting choices.
"I'd like to just play a regular girl who, you know, is facing the world," Nicki explained. "Something really sentimental and organic, that girls all around the world can identify with. You know, how Jada Pinkett Smith did in 'Jason's Lyric.' "
