Lady Gaga doesn't want us to know too much about her "Judas" video before its premiere on Thursday night -- but she does want us to know what it is not. In an interview with E! News correspondent Giuliana Rancic, the pop star tries to clear up the misconception that her song and video are a statement about Christianity.
"I don't view the video as a religious statement," Gaga says. "I view it as social statement. I view it as a cultural statement. It's a metaphor."
With a laugh, she adds, "It's not meant to be a Biblical lesson."
You could see where people would get that idea, though. All we really know about the plot of the seven-minute, $10-million video is that Gaga will be playing Mary Magdalene (Jesus' follower and traditionally a reformed prostitute). Factor in the song's lyrics about falling in love with the Biblical betrayer Judas, and you've got a formula for controversy.
Gaga's creative director and the video's codirector Laurianne Gibson claims she made sure the video was non-offensive, because she's a Bible believer and "didn't want lightning to strike me." But we'll just have to wait until after the premiere -- 7 p.m. Thursday night on E! News -- to see if "Judas" will be Gaga's "Like a Prayer" moment.
The "Judas" premiere is just one of the many opportunities to go Gaga this week. Right now, if you hurry, you can catch a leaked performance of her new song "Americano" on YouTube. On Friday, E! Online will release a brand-new, extended interview with Gaga about "Judas." Then on Saturday, HBO will premiere the highly anticipated Monster Ball Tour concert special. Devoted Little Monsters should also take a look at the newly released track listing for her new album Born This Way (dropping May 23), which includes such intriguing titles as "Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)." Think that one will cause controversy in the unicorn community?
